BTW, what are MMPs?

They're third-party platforms that help app marketers track and attribute user interactions with their mobile applications. These platforms offer a reliable way to measure conversions from various ad networks, social media channels, and other digital sources. By tracking and attributing user actions, MMPs provide a complete picture of the customer journey and the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

Without MMPs, mobile marketers would have a much harder time figuring out which ad drove an install, where their best users are coming from, or how to allocate ad spend. Instead, MMPs bring all this data together into a cohesive platform, delivering detailed insights and making it easier to refine strategies and improve ROI.

 

Setting up an illumin integration

illumin is partnered with four major MMPs, so most of the integration work is already done and waiting for you. All you need to do is log into your MMP account and select Acuity Ads as the integrated partner. (That’s our former name, so be sure to search for Acuity Ads instead of illumin.)

Enabling in-app tracking

When you’re ready to start tracking in-app activity, there are a few steps to tackle—most of them on your MMP account. To keep things simple, we’ve put together a handy checklist to guide you. Don’t forget to check out the instructions from your MMP for any specific details.

  1. SDK Integration: Add the MMP’s SDK to your app. This is essential for tracking user activity and conversions.
  2. Event Tracking Setup: Set up in-app events like installs, sign-ups, or purchases in your MMP dashboard. Then, connect your MMP to illumin using our Postback pixel (see below) to share conversion data and improve campaign performance.
  3. Attribution Links: Create links in your MMP to track installs and in-app events for each campaign. These links show how users move from clicking an ad to engaging with your app.
  4. Consent and Privacy: Make sure your app complies with privacy laws like GDPR and CCPA. Getting user consent is critical for legally sharing data between your MMP and illumin.
  5. Test Everything: Run tests to check the full flow—from ad clicks to in-app events. Ensure your MMP and illumin are receiving accurate data, postbacks work correctly, and conversions are tracked properly.

To track app events with illumin, you’ll need to create an app event tracking pixel. Here’s how it works:

Creating an app event tracker

To create an app event tracker, go to the top menu bar, and click Library > Trackers. On the new page, click the New Tracker button.

 

In the popup window, enter a unique Tracker Name and select the App Event Tracking option. Click Create.

 

The next page shows tracking data for in-app activity (if available). When you're ready to paste the tracker snippet into the app SDK, click the Copy Tracker Code button. Click the View button to see the snippet, find the tracker key, and edit the code.
